This is what it's like to be the working poor. I live with with my mom and we both work and get no public assistance of any kind. She works full time at a local grocery store (making less than $11.00 an hour) in their office and I work part time as a graphic designer and web admin at a small company ($9.00 an hour). I also clean houses and mow grass to try and make ends meet. We are constantly living paycheck to paycheck. Right now I have $269.31 in our checking account and well over $300.00 worth of bills. I live in constant fear of something major going wrong. Every time I think I've managed to get a little bit of money put aside for emergencies something goes horribly wrong. Neither of us has a credit card or credit card debt, we don't have cell phones or even cable TV anymore because we couldn't afford it. Which is a major reason I haven't been posting much artwork. We do our best to live within our means but sometimes it's just not enough. I do have internet because I need it both for work and for our BasicTalk home phone service.
Last year my mom had to have a hysterectomy and luckily she does have health insurance but even with that we can't afford to pay the thousand dollars we owe that wasn't covered. It's now in collections. I have no health insurance or dental and to be honest my teeth are rotting out of my mouth. If I broke a leg a doctor would have to help me but a dentist doesn't. And even getting one tooth fixed is more than I make in a month. We live in Pennsylvania and have spent the last four winters freezing our asses off because our furnace stopped working and we can't afford to get it fixed. I haven't bought clothes that weren't from a thrift store in more than five years. Haven't been to a movie since 2006 when I saw King Kong. We don't spend money we don't have.
June 30th my alternator went on my 18 year old car for the second time in less than a year and I also need to have a front axle replaced. Which I was trying to save up to repair. We were managing to share her car due to the fact that I work days and she works second shift. I'd take her car to my work which is farther away and an elderly neighbor was dropping her off at work and I'd pick her up at eleven. Today she had a doctors appointment and on the way home her front passenger side control arm snapped on her car. A car which somehow passed state inspection on July 1st. If my mom had been on the interstate and the wheel came off she likely would have been killed. Luckily it happened just before she got on. It had rusted through and the garage didn't catch the problem, now both need to be replaced and neither of us have a way to get to work. She can get a ride to work but would have to walk home at eleven o'clock at night on a badly lit highway. Buses aren't an option because of where we live and a cab for me to get to work and home would cost more than I make in a day.
So as much as I hate having to do this I started a gofundme campaign to try and raise some money to fix our cars and possibly get our heat fixed so we aren't freezing again this winter.http://www.gofundme.com/bjj2p8
Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated even if it's just sharing this on social media. I'm willing to do graphics or website work in exchange. Hell I'll do just about anything if it means my almost 60 year old mother doesn't have to walk 2 miles home in the dark and I don't lose my job which is a possibility if I can't get there. It may only be part time but it is a job and I'm grateful to have it in this economy.
So thanks for reading.
